From the News-Record:
“Residents who oppose expanding the White Street Landfill will make a trek across the city Friday and host a rally at the city dump.
The caravan will meet at 1:30 p.m. in the Guilford College area Friday. Vehicles will parade to the other side of Greensboro, to the White Street Landfill, for a rally at 3 p.m.
The event will be hosted by the New Garden Friends Meetings’ Social Concerns Committee, the Piedmont League of Women Voters and Citizens for Economic and Environmental Justice.
The rally idea was brought up by social concerns committee members, who were worried that the City Council’s landfill debate was being portrayed as a northeast Greensboro issue.
There are residents on the west side of town that oppose reopening the city landfill to household trash too, said rally organizer Cheryl Hopkins.
“Some of us in this committee were concerned about the landfill issue and thought that a full discussion of the issues wasn’t happening,” said Hopkins, who said residents aren’t really being heard.
So far more than 40 vehicles plan to be in the caravan. Caravan participants must sign up by 8 p.m. Thursday. To join the caravan, contact Hopkins at 317-3352, email@example.com, or Mary Louise Smith at 336-392-3055, firstname.lastname@example.org.”
