Last week, UNC Greensboro released a study about gangs based on poor logic that only serves to stir up fear (and possibly funding, if you’re in the right seat). Their findings were based on the number of alleged gang members in Guilford County, which are inflated compared to the actual number of gang members. In addition, they claim a certain number of crimes were committed by gang members based on arrests, which are a far cry from convictions and therefore entirely invalid.
Researchers at the university level should be ashamed of such shoddy work that makes it so easy to punch holes in their research without even reading the entire study. It’s hard not to wonder, whose interest is this in? Who does it protect and who does it serve?
